COURSE DESCRIPTION:   Economic analysis with emphasis on price and distribution theory, scarcity, opportunity costs, supply, demand, elasticity of supply and demand, consumer's behavior, cost theory and output determination under various market structures, factor markets, public choice, income distribution, externalities and government regulation, and comparative economic systems.

 

COURSE OBJECTIVE:

  1. Apply tools of microeconomics analysis to show the price and output decisions with in the four basic market structures.
    2. Solve problems related to consumer and producer behavior both in product market and in factor market.
    3. Apply of elasticities in real world phenomenon.
    4. Illustrate the operation of market mechanism as it is applied to American economy.
    5. Apply microeconomic analysis to government policies relating to the welfare of market participants and income distribution.

GRADING:

Your grade is based upon the following assignments and tests:                                                   

6 Classroom Assignments    20% (3.33% each)          

 3 Exams        45% (15% each)                                   

Final Exam   35%

A=90%   B=80%  C= 60%  D= 50%

If you wish to withdraw from this class, be sure to drop officially in the record office. Failure to do so will result in an F.

 

Exams:  All the exams will consist two parts: true/false and multiple-choice problems. Please bring a calculator and scantron (#882-E) to each exam. Class notes will be very helpful in preparing for the exams. You can prepare a formulae sheet to bring to the exam. No makeup examinations will be given.  If you miss any exam, your overall Final will exam will replace that exam grade.

FINAL IS SELECTIVELY COMPREHENSIVE.

 

Classroom assignments:Classroom assignments have to be finished in the classroom.  They are open-book exercises and will be given at the end of the section. No makeup assignments will be given, and no late classroom assignments will be accepted.  If you missed an assignment, you have to do the extra ones to make up. You will be given more than 6 assignments. If you did more than 6 assignments, the extra assignments will be counted as extra credit towards your grade.

 

Course Rules, Policies, and Student Expectations

  1. All quantitative answers in class work and exams should have at least 2 decimal digits, 4 are recommended.
  2. Inactive or unprepared students may be dropped from class due to poor performance as determined by the professor. You are expected to participate in all course activities including lectures, class and group work. Not participating in 80% of class activities may result in a failing grade for the class or being dropped for failing to meet the academic standards for this class.
  3. You are expected to check your Mt. SAC email daily. When communicating with your professor use only your Mt.SAC email address and be sure to correctly identify yourself in each email and list class that you are enrolled. Grade questions will not be answered by e-mail, please communicate with me in person.
  4. You are expected to comply with your professor’s instructions; failure to do so may result in your dismissal and/or failing the course.
  5. Be polite, display common courtesy, and respect towards your classmates and professor. Please refrain from talking during lectures. Disruptive students may be asked to leave the class, marked as absent, and reported to the Student Life office.
  6. Use of profanity, disrespecting classmates, or the professor will not be tolerated.  You will be dismissed from class and may be dropped from the class and receive an “F”.
  7. Turn OFF cell phones and all electronic devices before entering the class. If any of your electronic devices ring you may be penalized or dismissed from class.
  8. Students registered with DSPS and require special accommodation need to contact the professor. If special arrangements are require for an exam, please notify your professor at least 1 week in advance.
  9. Attendance is mandatory in this class and roll will be taken at the beginning of each class. Absent students are responsible for the material covered in class.
  10. Tardy student will NOT be given extra-time for exams. Student arriving beyond 10 minutes (as determined by the professor) will not be permitted to enter the class AND will forfeit their right to take the exam. No-Make ups will be provided.

 

The general rules of the College, the requirements of the Business Division and the Department of Business Administration are all assumed and specially applied to the cases of cheating, plagiarism and assignment of an incomplete grade. DSP&S rules will be followed in this course.
